 By using management methods based on ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards, KMTL responds to the requirements of a wide variety of fields including the nuclear and aircraft industries. We were accredited to Nadcap (a special process accreditation program in the aerospace industry) as the first material testing laboratory in Japan and the quality management system is of the utmost importance for us to satisfy customer needs.

CONSULTING

 Various non-distractive and distractive testing technologies are used for new materials research and development, component testing and failure investigations, and aging degradation and residual life evaluation. KMTL makes analysis and evaluation through our multidiscipline engineering and consulting service based on our knowledge and experience and plays an important role in developing new materials, improving the maintenance technology and service life of power generating facilities and machines.

MINIATURE TESTING SERIESSUBMILLI TEST

 Residual life evaluation of power plant components has been conventionally conducted by using nondestructive or mechanical methods that require fairly large samples extracted from the components. A recently developed mechanical method is the one that uses an approx. 2 mm diameter miniature specimen, which will minimize the effect to the components and is less expensive. KMTL has been conducting research and development for the methods and machines using an even smaller 1 mm diameter specimen, receiving good reputation from domestic and international suppliers.

ON-SITE SAMPLING USING EDSE

 In all industries such as the electric power industry using thermal power generation, evaluating residual life and ensuring reliability and health of operating plants are important international issues. Our unique Electric Discharge Equipment (EDSE) aids in periodic maintenance and other inspections at the sites of the plants through sample extraction, as required by the customer, as well as in removal of the defective or deteriorated parts of components.

KMTL’s on-site sampling

① uses Electric Discharge Sampling Equipment developed by our company,
② takes samples directly from plant components (Sample thickness: 2.5 mm),
③ shortens time required to extract a sample (Standard time for taking a sample: 2 - 3 hours),
④ includes scaffolding and curing (Normal work period: 1 week),
⑤ requires no big work, extracting a small sample,
⑥ is available at low cost utilizing the equipment and excellent staff,
⑦ can be conducted at any place for any part, and
⑧ causes little adverse effect on facilities and components.

SMALL PUNCH CREEP TESTING EQUIPMENT

 KMTL, jointly with Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., has developed the world’s most compact-sized and lightweight Small Punch Creep Testing Machine. This equipment enables creep testing to evaluate material deterioration with minimum amount of samples.

 Non-destructive and destructive testing methods are used to evaluate heat-resisting members of high-temperature and high-pressure components in thermal power generation facilities, and, however, they conventionally require, for example, a 6-mm diameter bar specimen that significantly affects the component to be sampled. This equipment uses a miniature specimen (a disk 8-mm in diameter and 0.5 mm in thickness) machined from a sample material scooped from piping for residual life evaluation.

 This development was highly regarded and won awards from The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers Kyushu Branch and Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering Society Kyushu Branch.

Outline

 The small punch creep test is a type of miniature testing that obtain creep properties using a test specimen smaller than a one dime coin. For diagnosing the level of aging and deterioration of power generation equipment including boilers, creep testing is conducted using this machine with small amount of sample taken from the component surface.

 The main body of the machine is the smallest and lightest, one tenth in size and one fifth in weight of the conventional equipment. Lever type loading system is employed. The specimen is set in the chamber with argon-gas atmosphere. Two pairs of displacement gages attached to the loading shaft increase measurement accuracy.

The time to rupture, creep curve, and creep rate are obtained from creep testing on a small punch creep testing machine.

Open Lab in Tokyo Sales Office

 KMTL operates Open Lab in our Tokyo Sales Office. Its facilities include a miniature creep testing machine and miniature fatigue testing machine as well as a mass spectrometer that uses soft ionization method which is under joint development with research institutions.
 This Open Lab has been utilized by various customers. Especially for the soft-ionization-mass-spectrometer development, technology developers and potential users have worked together and openly evaluated and reviewed new technologies.
